Pippa Passes
Just after dinner everyone put on their gear to ride the quarter mile or
so to the hostel. Before we actually got
on the bikes there was a horrible metal-on-metal noise as the Honda Accord
pictured below went just far enough onto the shoulder
to clip Jeff's bike. Most of the luggage went flying, wheel was destroyed,
derailer was damaged or destroyed,
frame slightly bent, luggage racks pretty well busted up.
The woman driving the car of course wanted to know why he had parked in
the middle of the road.
Whatever. To her credit, though, she did return the accident scene rather
than keep going.
Understandably upset Geoff.
First responders on the scene were campus police from Alice Lloyd college,
located just down the street.
It was non-injury and outside their jurisdiction so they came, took down
the information,
called the Kentucky State Police and left. Still, they were cool and professional.

Eric and Geoff with Officer Kelley of the Kentucky State Police. Officer
Kelley is an former Marine and probably one
really tough guy, but he's about as nice a man and professional a peace
officer as you are going to meet. In
fact, he was so nice that at first I figured it was a trick to get everyone
to relax, but I think it was completely
genuine. For example: he offered to store Jeff's bike in his own garage and then mail it to Jeff when he got an address.
For those of you (like me) raised on a Smokey And The Bandit/Sheriff Beaufort T. Johnson image of
Southern law enforcement, I have an important message: it's not necessarily
like that anymore.
