Breaks Interstate Park to Pippa Passes, KY
Finally, a decent day of riding. Immediately after leaving the Breaks Interstate
Park is the Kentucky border.
Two breathtaking views of the river running through Breaks from the Scenic
Overlook on Hwy 80.
Last Chance Liquor on Hwy. 122. I'm not sure why it's called that since
as far as I can tell neither of the two counties
whose border it sits on (Floyd and Pike) are dry, but then again what
do I know. The very friendly Rotweiller chatting with
Mieko above seemed to work there, as well as several similarly social
cats. Serious note: 122 is a steep, dangerous,
narrow rode full of blind corners. Add to this a car-full-of-young-guys-psyched-for-a-party magnet like this store and
you have a recipe for serious accident. Stay well to the right and never
stop unless it's necessary and you
are _sure_ you are visible from a long way back.
While eating our lunch outside a little supermarket the bread deliveryman
walked over to us and said, in short, you
need energy so have these slightly out of date Little Debbie Brownie Loaves.
I had to talk him into only giving us only two boxes...
he wanted to hand me 5. I'd never heard of Little Debbie but they sure are good if you like chocolate. A couple of hours later
when we stopped to buy water at another little market the grocier gave Mieko a couple of free tomatoes.
(left) We're Not Worthy! We're Not Worthy!! Finishing up a Left to Right
Coast tour Dewey and Tom. Even if you
didn't know they were veteran riders looking and talking to them, their
faded canvas bags
make it clear these guys have made their bones on the road.
(right) While we were talking to Dewey and Tom Nancy and her sister (neighbor?)
Helen appeared. They had let some cyclists sleep
in their yard a few years ago and had gotten to be good friends. They offered
us cold drinks, which we would have _loved_
to accept but with darkness only a few hours away couldn't.
More like the Kentucky I was expecting.
We're Not Worthy!! We're Not Worthy!! Alfred Jordan on the last leg of
his West to East tour. The man confidently
explained that he's good for 150 miles/day on flat ground, 120 with rolling
hills. Wow.
Only one place to stay in Pippa Passes, and its right next to a little
pizza place.
Guess where we had dinner. We were soon joined by Eric (L) and Geoff (R),
who were finishing up a day of 94 mountainous miles.
And it wasn't just that day....these guys left Yorktown 9 days ago: Mieko and left it 26 days ago (see FAQ).
They are not not even veteran cyclists --neither
had ridden in 5 years or more. Just two guys in shape and on a schedule.
My hat is off to them.
Sadly, just after dinner we all got a good refresher in how dangerous cycling could be. No injury, but some property damage.
